How To Find The Best GPS Fishfinder?

Written by Mustaq. Posted in Fly Fishing

When it comes to finding the best GPS fishfinder, you can never go wrong by following these tips that I’m going to share with you.  If you are new to GPS fishfinders, I’m sure your number #1 question is “Can I select the right GPS fishfinder for my needs?”

Let me share with you what I’m looking for when I go shop for my best GPS Fishfinder:

  1. Type of Transducers
First, if you are going to use the GPS Fishfinder to fish in lakes and shallow coastal areas, suffice to select a unit that is a single frequency transducer.  The dual frequency transducers are for deep sea fishing.  If you find the check that the fishfinder is a Dual beam (Humminbird), it falls under the dual frequency category.  The dual beam transducer will limit the beam size for the high frequency beam so you only want to use them in deep water because the high frequency is what you see fish with.
  2. Depth – Next, check the maximum depth the fishfinder sonar is able to reach. It is directly related to power and quality of the transducer.Higher priced Fishfinders tend to have better penetration of water and better fish finding ability.  Remember that the depths shown on the specifications are for clear water, saltwater and murky waters will limit the depths the sonar will penetrate.
  3. Power – For the most part the more power you can get the better. In lakes and shallow waters, it is good to get a unit the has good imaging, but as with more power, it will come with a price.
  4. Display resolution – We can have high power, with the best tranducers and sonar but it is no use if the GPS fishfinder units is difficult to use and the display resolutions is difficult to read.  I like fishfinder units that provide higher resolution, which gives better image of maps, location of fish, indicators and even weather conditions.Color screens are better in my opinion because they are more effective and when there is direct sunlight you can see still the display clearly.
  5. Display size – Finally I like a display that boasts high resolution details, it is useless if the units gives you a small Displays size.Get a GPS Fishfinder that you feel at ease with because you need to use it effectively and not strain your eyes reading the equipment figuring out what it is telling you.  The range of sizes varies from four inches to seven inches to much larger ones.Generally, you can see that the larger the display and screen size, the higher you have to pay for the Fishfinder unit.
